| Hoonah.Net is the non-profit, community-based internet service provider for Hoonah. A chronological timeline: 1996 The startup of SEAKnet, an organization aiming to provide five communities of Southeast Alaska (Gustavus, Haines, Hoonah, Kake and Petersburg ) local internet access. If successful, the SEAKnet model could be replicated throughout rural Southeast Alaska. 1997 Initial purchase of equipment, installation, and training administered by the Southeast Regional Resource Center (SEARRC) with a grant from the National Telecommunications Infrastructure Agency (NTIA). Additional support came from the Alaska State Library, and in Hoonah, the City Schools and Liquor Board. State Office of Network Services (SONS) is contracted to operate the equipment. 1998 Hoonah.Net incorporates as a non-profit and hires Gene Howell as a part-time administrator. 1999 Installation in Hoonah of a VSAT satellite (Intellicom) & server made possible with support from the City of Hoonah and Liquor Board. This makes Hoonah.Net a full service Internet Service Provider (ISP) and gives us a high speed backbone. Number of dial-in lines are increased to 16, or 7-1/2 users per dial-in line. 2000 Hoonah.Net moves 30% of its members to 2Mbps wireless modems at no cost to its members. A firewall appliance is installed to protect Hoonah.Net from a increasing number of hacker attacks nation-wide. 2001 Hoonah.Net moves into its own housing when Hoonah Auto & Marine goes out-of-business. 2002 Intellicom goes out of business and Hoonah.Net goes to SpaceCom for satellite service. Due to increasing operating costs wireless users must pay $150 to install. 2004 Hoonah.Net upgrades our wireless users at no cost to 802.11g. Wireless is now 60% of our members. Our firewall is upgraded. We migrate from SpaceCom satellite service to @ Contact for a trial. Lyman Bros replaces @ Contact after a bad trial. 2005 The Colalt RaQ4 mail server is retired and replaced with Qmail. |
An dial-in account costs $42 per month + $35 installation. The $35 installation go towards adding modems and dial-in lines and maintaining existing equipment. The Hoonah.Net Community Board is committed to maintaing our quality service by budgeting for peak use.
